Through 2024-2025, the conversation was about AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — disciplines focused on getting cited inside specific AI search interfaces like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and AI Overviews. Through 2026, a broader term has been quietly consolidating in the industry: AIO — AI Optimization — encompassing not just AI search engines but every AI system that now mediates discovery, evaluation, recommendation, and decision-making.
The shift matters because what's getting optimized has expanded. AEO answered a narrow question: how do you get cited in AI search engines. AIO answers the broader question that's emerging in 2026: how do you become legible, citable, and recommendable across every AI system that mediates between prospect intent and brand consideration. That includes AI search engines, yes. But it also includes AI assistants embedded in productivity tools, AI shopping agents that browse on behalf of users, AI procurement systems running enterprise vendor evaluations, RAG-powered customer support tools that cite knowledge sources, AI copilots inside vertical SaaS platforms, and the rapidly emerging layer of agentic AI workflows that autonomously execute multi-step tasks involving brand selection.
AEO is a special case of AIO. GEO is a special case of AIO. Traditional SEO is a special case of AIO. Each prior discipline optimized for one type of AI-mediated (or pre-AI) discovery. AIO is the umbrella category that subsumes them all.
This piece defines the discipline as it's actually emerging in 2026, distinguishes the two competing meanings of AIO that current industry discourse is fighting over, takes a position on which one will dominate, and walks through what operating-model changes the shift requires for performance marketers operating in 2026-2028. The vocabulary is getting clearer in 2026; the operators who internalize the discipline now will own positions through 2028 that incumbents who never updated their mental model can't dislodge.
The two meanings of AIO competing in 2026 discourse
Industry discourse currently treats AIO as two distinct concepts, often without distinguishing them. Both are real, but only one is the right discipline to organize a 2026 marketing operating model around.
AIO-1: Search-AIO. Used by Contently, PageOnePower, Panamedia, Digital Rhetoric, and similar sources. AIO is the umbrella discipline that ensures your entire content ecosystem is legible to every AI system — assistants, models, copilots, vendor LLMs, internal AI tools, emerging RAG platforms, and the generative engines built into everyday software. This framing treats AIO as the natural successor to SEO/AEO/GEO — the discipline of making your brand discoverable, citable, and recommendable wherever AI mediates discovery. It's about being chosen as the AI's source of truth.
AIO-2: Campaign-AIO. Used by Adsmurai, ResultFirst, and paid-acquisition-focused sources. Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO) is an approach that applies artificial intelligence models to systematically improve the performance of digital marketing campaigns, making data-driven decisions and learning in real time from user behavior and outcomes. This framing treats AIO as AI-powered campaign automation — using AI to optimize bidding, creative selection, audience segmentation, and budget allocation across paid channels.
Both definitions describe real shifts. The question is which one the industry settles on as the dominant meaning of "AIO."
My position: the search-AIO definition will dominate by 2027. Three reasons:
Campaign-AIO is already covered by existing vocabulary. What Adsmurai and ResultFirst call campaign-AIO is what Meta calls Advantage+ Sales Campaigns, what Google calls Performance Max + AI Max, what TikTok calls Smart+, and what LinkedIn calls Predictive Audiences. The industry already has language for AI-automated campaigns; it doesn't need a new acronym for what already has a name. Campaign-AIO will likely retreat into being a synonym for "AI-driven campaign automation" — already-existing concepts with already-existing terms.
Search-AIO names something that doesn't have a name yet. What Contently and PageOnePower call search-AIO — the broader discipline of being citable across every AI system, not just AI search engines — doesn't have an alternative name. AEO is too narrow (specifies "answer engines"). GEO is too narrow (specifies "generative engines"). LLM-SEO is awkward and doesn't capture the agentic-AI layer. AIO is the only candidate term that's broad enough to cover the actual emerging scope.
The semantic gravity favors the broader meaning. Acronyms tend to drift toward their broadest plausible interpretation when the field is expanding. SEO started as "search engine optimization" focused on a few engines; it now includes voice search, local search, mobile search, image search, video search. AEO will follow the same pattern, except the umbrella term that wins will be AIO rather than "expanded AEO." The broader meaning has the structural advantage.

What AIO encompasses that AEO doesn't
AEO was sufficient when AI search engines were the only meaningful AI-mediated discovery layer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and AI Overviews each operate as answer engines — users type queries, engines return cited answers. The AEO playbook was clear: optimize for citation inside those engines.
The 2025-2026 reality is that AI-mediated discovery has expanded well beyond search engines. Five additional layers now matter:
1. AI-powered productivity assistants embedded in everyday tools. Microsoft Copilot inside Word/Excel/Outlook/Teams. Google's Gemini inside Workspace. ChatGPT inside MacOS. Notion AI inside the Notion workspace. Each of these surfaces brand recommendations when users ask category questions ("what's a good [category] tool for [use case]") inside the tools they already use. The brands cited inside productivity assistants get evaluated; the brands not cited get ignored. AEO frameworks don't address productivity-assistant optimization specifically.
2. AI shopping agents browsing on behalf of users. Perplexity's shopping agent, OpenAI's agentic browsing, Anthropic's Claude with computer use — these systems can autonomously execute multi-step shopping workflows: search categories, compare products, evaluate reviews, complete purchases. When the agent decides which products to consider, brands that appear in the agent's reasoning chain compete with brands that don't. Optimizing for agent consideration is structurally different from optimizing for human consideration.
3. AI procurement systems for B2B vendor evaluation. Enterprise procurement teams increasingly use AI tools to generate vendor shortlists, evaluate proposals, and surface red flags. These systems read public documentation, ranking sources, customer review depth, regulatory filings, and security certifications. Brands legible to procurement AI get on the shortlist; brands invisible to procurement AI don't.
4. RAG-powered support and recommendation tools inside vertical platforms. When a Shopify merchant asks the Shopify AI assistant for "what email marketing tool integrates best with my store," the answer comes from the platform's RAG-indexed knowledge base. When a Salesforce admin asks Einstein for "what CRM extension solves [problem]," same mechanism. The brands indexed in platform-internal RAG systems get recommended. AEO doesn't address platform-internal RAG optimization.
5. AI copilots inside vertical SaaS recommending integrations and extensions. HubSpot's Breeze recommending email marketing partners. Notion's AI recommending integrations. Linear AI suggesting workflow tools. Each of these is a discovery moment where brands inside the recommendation pool compete with brands outside it.
AIO is the discipline that addresses all five layers plus the AI search engines AEO already covered. The methodology is structurally similar — entity legibility, content extractability, technical crawlability, authority signals — but the surfaces are different and the optimization priorities shift accordingly.
The four functional shifts AIO requires
The operating-model changes AIO demands are bounded but specific. Four shifts matter most.
1. From query universe to query + agent universe
AEO frameworks document the query universe — the prompts users type into AI search engines. AIO frameworks document the query + agent universe — the prompts users type AND the autonomous task workflows that AI agents execute on users' behalf. A user typing "best CRM for venture-backed startups" into ChatGPT is the AEO scenario. The same user telling their AI agent "find me a CRM for our 12-person Series A startup, evaluate the top three, and book demos with the top option" is the AIO scenario. The agent workflow involves multiple AI decision points — initial shortlist generation, comparative evaluation, demo eligibility verification, contact-info extraction, calendar scheduling. Brands need to be legible at each decision point. The query-universe approach misses the agent-workflow approach.
Documenting the agent universe for your brand: what tasks would an AI agent autonomously execute that touch your category? What signals does the agent need at each decision point? Where would your brand currently fail an agent's verification step? Most accounts haven't started this documentation. The bounded version is 20-40 hours of work for most brands; the value is that you can't optimize for what you haven't documented.
2. From content optimization to entity engineering
AEO emphasizes content optimization — structuring articles, landing pages, and FAQs to be cited by AI search engines. AIO emphasizes entity engineering — building a coherent, machine-legible identity that AI systems across all five surface layers can recognize, trust, and use to generate recommendations.
The shift in emphasis matters because content is just one signal in the entity graph. The full entity engineering work includes: Wikipedia article accuracy and depth, Wikidata entry completeness with all properties, Google Knowledge Panel claim and content, cross-database reconciliation across every relevant industry directory, schema markup deployment across all relevant types, named-author / founder / executive entity surfacing with credentials, customer review depth across all relevant review sites, earned media in AI-cited sources, professional association memberships surfaced as structured data, and the technical infrastructure (llms.txt, server-side rendering, AI-bot accessibility) that makes the entity graph crawlable.
Content optimization is necessary but no longer sufficient. The entities are what AI systems organize their recommendations around; content is what entities produce.
3. From citation share to recommendation share
AEO measures citation share — how often your brand is cited in AI search answers compared to competitors. AIO measures recommendation share — how often your brand is recommended (cited, suggested, surfaced, picked) across the full set of AI-mediated discovery surfaces. The metrics overlap but aren't identical.
Citation share is a subset. Recommendation share also includes: how often productivity assistants suggest your brand when users ask category questions inside Word/Excel/Outlook. How often AI shopping agents include your brand in autonomously-generated shortlists. How often AI procurement systems put your brand on RFP-eligibility lists. How often platform-internal AI copilots recommend your brand as an integration. How often agentic workflows execute the steps necessary to evaluate or contact your brand.
Measuring recommendation share is harder than measuring citation share — the surfaces are less observable, the tooling is less mature, and the methodologies are still being established through 2026. But the metric is closer to the actual outcome marketers care about. Brands cited but not recommended end up in the AI answer's "considered" list rather than the "chosen" list. Brands recommended end up in the consideration set that converts to evaluation, which converts to revenue.
4. From content production to entity governance
AEO operating models center on content production — shipping articles, landing pages, comparison content, FAQ pages, and use-case content at sufficient volume to feed AI search engines. AIO operating models center on entity governance — maintaining a coherent, accurate, current entity representation across the full AI-discovery surface area.
Entity governance is a different operational discipline than content production. It's more like data governance in enterprise data architecture than like content marketing. The work involves: maintaining canonical entity records in Wikidata and Knowledge Graph, monitoring cross-database consistency, auditing schema markup across the full site quarterly, tracking earned media accumulation as authority signal, monitoring third-party review site profiles for accuracy and recency, and maintaining the technical infrastructure (llms.txt updates, server-side rendering health, AI-bot accessibility) that makes the entity legible.
Most marketing teams don't have entity governance as a defined function. The role doesn't fit cleanly under "content marketing" or "SEO" or "PR" or "brand management" — it spans all four. The teams that operationalize this function first will compound entity authority in ways teams running 2024-style operating models can't match.
What AIO doesn't change
The shift from AEO to AIO is real, but it doesn't invalidate the prior catalog work. Several things stay constant:
The 5-zone audit framework remains correct. The general AEO audit methodology and its five-vertical adaptations (D2C, B2B SaaS, Fintech, Healthcare, B2B Services) still describe the right diagnostic structure. AIO expands what each zone covers but doesn't change the zone structure. The audit still asks: are you measuring (Zone 1), is your entity hygiene clean (Zone 2), is your content AI-readable (Zone 3), is your authority sufficient (Zone 4), is your technical infrastructure crawlable (Zone 5).
The vertical-specific operating models remain correct. The B2B SaaS, D2C, Fintech, Healthcare, and B2B Services operating systems describe how marketing actually works in each vertical. AIO is one component of those systems — the discovery edge — not a replacement for the broader operating-model architecture.
The four-pillar architecture remains correct. The CMO Operating System framework — Data Foundation, AI-Augmented Execution, Creative Pipeline, Discovery & Conversion Edges — still describes the four pillars of modern performance marketing. AIO sits inside the "Discovery & Conversion Edges" pillar as the discovery-side discipline. The other three pillars don't change.
The case study methodology remains correct. The diagnostic → intervention → outcome arc demonstrated across Cases #01-05 still works for AIO engagements. The binding constraint may shift from "entity hygiene" to "agent workflow visibility" in specific cases, but the methodology is the same.
What changes is the scope of what counts as "discovery" — and therefore what falls under the discovery edge in the operating-model framework. AEO covered AI search engines. AIO covers AI search engines plus four additional surface layers. The framework expands; it doesn't break.
What to do this quarter
Three priorities for performance marketing operators in Q3 2026:
1. Update your vocabulary. Stop referring to "AEO" as if it covers the full scope of AI-mediated discovery. Start referring to "AIO" as the umbrella discipline, with AEO as the AI-search-engine subset, GEO as the generative-search subset, and traditional SEO as the pre-AI subset. The vocabulary shift signals to your team, your stakeholders, and your CFO that you're tracking the full discipline rather than a slice of it.
2. Document your agent universe. Identify the 20-40 AI-mediated task workflows that would autonomously execute touching your category. Where are you legible to those workflows? Where would you fail an agent's verification step? Where are competitors getting included that you're missing? The exercise is bounded — most accounts can complete it in a long working session — and it surfaces optimization priorities that the query-universe approach misses.
3. Establish an entity governance function. Assign someone — internal or external — to own entity governance as a defined function. Quarterly Wikidata audit, schema markup audit, third-party review site audit, llms.txt audit, AI-bot accessibility audit, knowledge panel audit. The function doesn't need to be a full FTE in most operations; 8-15 hours per month from a competent specialist covers most needs. But it does need to be defined; if no one owns entity governance, entity governance won't happen.
